Smokefree 2025 Goal progressing

On Monday our Mid Canterbury Health Promoter Mandy Casey, and Manager of Health Promotion Martin Witt, met with Jo Goodhew MP for Rangitata  to discuss progress toward the Smokefree 2025 goal.

Top of the agenda was the Government’s decision to progress legislation for the introduction of standardised [plain] packaging for tobacco products, which was welcomed. Further wide ranging discussion looked at future strategies to address both the demand and supply of tobacco and these included  the role of  taxation , support for priority groups such as pregnant Maori women, options to restrict the sale of tobacco as well as partnerships with local authorities and the emerging issue of e.cigarettes.

Meeting in Ashburton,  Jo welcomed the fact that nearly all cafes in the town are now totally smokefree which is the result of the successful partnership between the Cancer Society, Canterbury DHB and local businesses.
