Is ‘roll-your-own’ tobacco safer to smoke?

No, roll-your-own tobacco is not safer to smoke than manufactured cigarettes. Roll-your-own tobacco in New Zealand has on average more nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide than manufactured cigarettes.

When smoked loose tobacco has:

  • more tar to nicotine than manufactured cigarettes
  • similar levels of cancer causing chemicals to manufactured cigarettes
  • more risk of developing a range of cancers compared with people who smoke of manufactured cigarettes

 

Roll-your-own cigarettes

 

The World Health Organization states that there is no evidence that roll-your-own cigarettes are less toxic than manufactured cigarettes. 

There is no safe way to smoke tobacco
